Theft can be charged as a felony or a misdemeanor, depending on a variety of different facts and circumstances. Of course, all theft charges are serious and can result in a criminal record that remains with you for the rest of your life.
One of the differences between felonies and misdemeanors is the possible penalties if convicted. In Illinois, the possible penalty for a felony includes prison time from a minimum of one year, for some felonies, to a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole for other felonies.
